Manufacturing/Mills
Gristmills and sawmills operated in almost every town before the American Revolution. By 1800 textile mills and woodenware operations had begun to dominate the economies of towns located near running water. By the beginning of the Civil War, sizable textile mills had been established in Harrisville, Keene, Swanzey, Peterborough, Troy, Hinsdale, and Jaffrey. In the twentieth century machine tool products have replaced the earlier reliance on wood and fiber.
