Heritage Project Presentation

                        This will teach students to look for primary source materials within their own families.

 

Letter Transcription

                        This exercise will teach the value of learning about the past through primary sources and also demonstrates the difficulties that might be faced in this type of research.

 

Final Essay

                        The essay allows students to make connections among the materials studied, thus enabling them to show that adversity can force one to develop strengths which can lead to success.

VIII. Additional  Information

           

                          This unit is designed for 11th or 12th grade American Studies, English, humanities, or US History classes. As written, the lessons are designed for 85 minute classes; teachers may select various components of the lessons to teach as their time allows.  Ideally, from start to finish the unit can be completed in 11 to 12 days. Skills emphasized include independent research, reading comprehension, note taking, historical and literary analysis, composition, oral presentations, group study, and critical thinking.
